About the Campaign
On February 20&21, 2019 the Brantford Symphony Orchestra presented it’s 4th annual Family/School Concert with a combined appearance of our Symphony Orchestra and Platypus Theatre.
2500 students and teachers from 15 schools in Brant and Six Nations attended three concert showings on Feb 20th and 21st!
In 2017 and 2018, these concerts were funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and we were able to meet all costs, while charging each student and teacher only $2 / ticket. 2018 was the first year we invited the schools to join us and it was a massive success! Nine schools with 1980 students and teachers attended our performance of Presto Mambo.
Below is feedback we received from a Brantford teacher who attended the 2018 performance:
I’m writing you to tell you how captivated my students and I were with your performance today at the Presto Mambo show at the Sanderson Centre in Brantford.
When the Brantford Symphony Orchestra played their 1st piece, I was impressed, but also worried that the students would soon lose interest in the show.
Then you came out and engaged them, and the show became educational, which was wonderful, but still not enough…I hoped that for my special needs students, there would be more…and to my delight, there was. I’m an educational assistant and feel that there needed to be a little something more for my students…
Then Max made his entrance…he was funny, enchanting and very engaging. I watched the faces of my students, who were smiling the entire time. The hour was the perfect length of time and the content was educational and light enough to be absorbed. So much thought went into this show, it’s bewitching and so enjoyable.
Thank you so much, for exposing our youth to the art of latin music and symphony.
I personally enjoyed every minute!
Concerts like these may be the only time a young child from Brantford is introduced to the arts. This kind of engagement is vital to the continued growth and sustainability of the Arts, not only in Brantford but across Ontario and Canada. The students are exposed to a world class performance and teachers are provided with curriculum packages that provide students with an educational component prior to the concert date.
The students from K-8 are thrilled to see not only the live theatre actors but also some of their favourite instruments live streamed on the large Sanderson Centre screen. This multi camera production is provided by Brantford’s own Adam Hislop and his team at Atomic Spark. Atomic Spark is also one of this year’s School Concert Sponsors and a Season Sponsor for 2019/20.
There was such popular demand from schools after the 2018 concert that the BSO decided to move forward with 3 concerts showings in 2019 on our own, without the Trillium funding. Due to the large cost of busing the students to the Sanderson, the Brantford Symphony is only charging the schools $5 per ticket for students and adults.
The total cost to provide our Brant students access to this kind of world class performance is approx. $58,000. After 2500 ticket sales it brings the net cost down to $46,000.
We have been very fortunate to have several local companies partner with us for the 2019 school production.
Presenting Sponsors are TD Bank and the Brant Youth Symphony Orchestra. We are also thrilled to have Atomic Spark and Millennium Security sponsor this year, along with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association and Brantford Artist Arthur Hawken
We are asking for donations and support from the Brant community by organizing this fundraising campaign to help cover costs from the 2019 School Concerts and also looking forward to costs of future School Productions. Over the past two years Brant area schools have indicated an increasing demand for their students to have ongoing access to the arts through attending Symphony performances . These partnerships with our local schools speak directly to the mission of the Brantford Symphony Orchestra.
“We provide symphonic experiences, giving people of all ages opportunities for musical appreciation and education.”
